The Advantages of 24/7 In-Home Senior Care: Jim’s Story

There are many reasons people choose in-home care for themselves or their loved ones, and a major medical event, such as a stroke, often requires care that goes beyond the capabilities of a spouse or family member. Suffering from a stroke is often a life-changing experience, and making sure you have proper home care services in place is vital to creating a path to a speedy recovery. The following case study is an example of how exceptional in-home care can improve the quality of life for seniors and their loved ones.

Jim’s Story

At 83, Jim had a stroke and ended up with paralysis on one side of his body. He and his wife, Lydia, live in an independent living community, and before the stroke, Jim took care of her and many of the household duties.

Although Jim was mentally fit, due to the paralysis he became unable to perform basic tasks like toileting, bathing, and eating. Lydia was physically unable to assist him with these activities and they both became concerned about how life would be once they were back home.

After he was released from the hospital, Jim went directly to an inpatient rehabilitation facility to recover from his stroke. It was there that Jim and Lydia began to contemplate in-home care as an option. Our Home Care Book admissions team visited Jim at the rehab facility and talked extensively with him to understand his specific needs and determine the level of care he would require. He was pleased to learn that our experienced caregivers could help with toileting, bathing, eating, preparing meals, transportation, incontinence and more.

Due to the significant change in lifestyle, Jim and Lydia decided that starting with 24/7 round-the-clock in-home care would be best to facilitate Jim’s continued recovery. The assistance of a professional caregiver would also help him avoid falling and injuring himself, which could lead to Jim returning to the hospital and starting the recovery process all over again.

Jim’s Recovery

After a few months at home, Jim began regaining his strength and started to become more comfortable with navigating his life post-stroke. Home Care Book’s team came out to do another assessment and recommended that he continue overnight care for assistance with things like going to the bathroom. Since he was doing so well, Jim was able to reduce his daytime care to four hours in the morning and four hours in the afternoon.

As with all of our clients, Home Care Book’s team remained in contact with Jim, and after several more months he was able to eliminate overnight care altogether. Continuing in-home care for four hours in the morning and four hours in the afternoon helped to ensure that Jim’s needs were still being met, and the support our caregivers provided to Jim and his family gave them the peace of mind they needed to feel secure about him living at home.
